Maurizio Cattelan 'The Third Hand’

Born in Italy in 1960, Maurizio Cattelan has been living in New York for the past thirty years. The scrutiny of power and belief systems is a theme that runs through his entire body of work but he leaves the interpreting of his artworks to the viewer: A pope is struck down by a meteorite, pigeons watch us from above, a shrunk Sistine Chapel lets us see all the amazing details at eye level, a dictator becomes a pathetic figure, perhaps asking for forgiveness, a monumental fascist greeting is nullified by missing fingers, a man and a dog seem to share a common dream or death…

In line with Antics’ mission to supply Stockholm with what it does not yet know it needs and to vitalize its art scene with conceptual approaches to exhibition making, Antics will set up base between Liljevalchs and Spritmuseum, housing a selection of art books and artists’ books. Reduced Admission Fee: Berlinde De Bruyckere – No Life Lost

Image: Artipelag

Artipelag offers a reduced admission fee to the exhibition No Life Lost with Berlinde De Bruyckere throughout Stockholm Art Week. See the exhibition at the advantageous price of 150 SEK (regular price 195 SEK). The admission fee includes introductions conducted Tuesday through Sunday, starting at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. in Swedish and 3 p.m. in English.

For the first time in Sweden, the Belgian artist Berlinde De Bruyckere is showcased in a major solo exhibition at Artipelag. The critically acclaimed exhibition 'No Life Lost' offers a comprehensive presentation of De Bruyckere's art practice, featuring a selection from 1995 to the present day. Berlinde De Bruyckere's large-scale sculptures and installations of wax, wood, textile, metal and horse hide are executed in an unmistakable artistic style. Grappling with the existential human condition, De Bruyckere's work addresses human vulnerability and fragility, desire and suffering, resilience and transformation. Including sculptures, installations and works on paper, No Life Lost spans from 1995 until today. With its diverse materials and extensive time span, the exhibition comprehensively presents De Bruyckere's art practice. A core theme in the exhibition is the ambiguity of the human condition and the fundamental human search for transformation, transcendence and reconciliation in the face of mortality. De Bruyckere is also highly topical at the 60th edition of the Biennale with an official Collateral Event for the Abbazia di San Giorgio Maggiore.

Artipelag is a unique venue for art, architecture, design, events and top-quality food in a beautiful archipelago setting on Värmdö, just 30 minutes from Stockholm city. The name Artipelag is a combination of Art, Activities and Archipelago. The idea was to create a destination where art, culture and gastronomy could interact and where the archipelago would be present throughout. Today, Artipelag has achieved international recognition, primarily through the numerous acclaimed art exhibitions displayed in the art gallery and the surroundings since its inception in 2012.

Johanna Karlsson - Notes
A new series of sculptures / reliefs are presented in the inner room of the gallery.

Mette Björnberg's exhibition 'For My Girls' is on view in the main gallery.
Gallery hours during Stockholm Art Week
May 14–19: Tuesday–Friday 12–5 pm, Saturday–Sunday 12–4 pm

We are delighted to announce a presentation with Johanna Karlsson in the inner room of the gallery. In the exhibition a series of small-scale landscape reliefs previously not shown in Sweden are presented. Johanna Karlsson was recently one of the contemporary artists included in the comprehensive Caspar David Friedrich exhibition Art for a New Age at Hamburger Kunsthalle in Germany.

Johanna Karlsson (b. 1968) lives and works in Stockholm. She is educated at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm (1991–1997). Johanna Karlsson constructs meticulously detailed portrayals of landscapes in her dioramas, using a mixed media technique including copper and silver wire, paper, textile, pigment and plaster. She takes fragments of nature into a cultural context, and the result is a laboratory-like presentation with an emotional load – a personal and poetic natural science. Johanna Karlsson does not add any special symbolic or thematic narratives to her nature studies. They belong to the larger story of all thing’s birth, construction and destruction. The time spent making the works becomes synonymous with its content.

Galleri Magnus Karlsson is a contemporary art gallery in Stockholm.

Market Art Fair 'Talks' - Gallerists and artists – how do they cohere?

Image: Market Art Fair

As an artist, being able to navigate one's creative path while simultaneously trying to make a living can be a challenging journey. This conversation highlights the relationship between galleries and artists, with voices from both the artists' and gallerists' perspectives. What is the difference between commercial and non-profit galleries?

The conversation is hosted by Liljevalchs Konsthall.
Participants: Joakim Ojanen (Artist), Katrin Westman (Artist), Katarina Sjögren (Gallerist) and Pontus Hammarén (Gallerist). Moderated by Jenny Danielsson (Co-founder of Konstkompaniet)

Death Mass III

Death Mass III

Image: Weronika Bela

A death mass is a requiem. The word requiem is Latin and means rest. The mass centers on prayer for the deceased.

The heart of the exhibition is a large newly produced work in the form of a six-meter high timbered black bell tower in the main exhibition space of Bonniers Konsthall. Several times per hour, the bell in the stack rings for the work’s protagonist Eva-Britt. On Sundays, Markus Öhrn and his invited guests give performances in the form of death masses at the top of the tower. Each death mass has a special place in Markus and Eva-Britt’s relationship and becomes the artist’s personal tribute and redress of a person who has played a crucial role in his life.

I’ve had a bell tower built in the main exhibition space, where I cast a bell with my grandmother’s name on it, at which my brother and I hold death masses in her memory. So I’m taking my experience with live performance and trying to concentrate that energy and convey a message that the audience can take home with them. It’s not just about my grandmother, it’s about all of our grandmothers and other older people around us.

– Markus Öhrn

Guided tour: Requiem for Eva-Britt

Image: Markus Öhrn

Markus Öhrn, known for his internationally acclaimed stage works exploring existential themes, presents his first major exhibition at Bonniers Konsthall. "Requiem for Eva-Britt," a collaboration with the group Azdora, unveils the comprehensive Azdora project initiated in 2015 in Italy. The exhibition includes a new performance work where Öhrn and guests conduct death masses from a towering bell tower every Sunday, inspired by his grandmother Eva-Britt's desire for a more daring life.

Eva-Britt's deathbed revelation to Öhrn in the Torne Valley sparked the ten-year collaboration between him and Azdora. The group of 13 elderly women from Italy's Emilia Romagna region express their defiance against societal norms, smashing machines, tattooing, and challenging conventions. Their collaboration embodies a radical shift of power, liberating female protagonists from patriarchal structures and societal constraints.

At the core of the exhibition stands a six-meter-high bell tower, symbolizing Eva-Britt's longing for liberation. Öhrn's death masses atop the tower, along with the Azdoras' presence, serve as a tribute to influential women across generations. Visitors engage in the exhibition's immersive experience, contemplating themes of redemption, empowerment, and the blurred boundaries between reality and artistic expression in Öhrn's and Azdora's provocative world.

Free entrance for all Friday, May 17.

Market Art Fair 'Talks' - Galleries and artists - How do they cohere?

Requiem for Eva-Britt (with introductions)

15 minute introductions to the exhibition at 1pm and 3pm.

Johanna Karlsson - Notes
A new series of sculptures / reliefs are presented in the inner room of the gallery.

Mette Björnberg's exhibition 'For My Girls' is on view in the main gallery.
We are open Tue-Fri 12–17, Sat-Sun 12–16 during Stockholm Art Week.Gallery hours during Stockholm Art Week

SEART - 'Held within dusk and dawn'

Image: Anneli Tegelberg

We are pleased to present artist Anneli Tegelberg's site-specific installation titled "Held within Dusk and Dawn" in the charming 18th-century belvedere / Lusthuset at Spökparken, right in the middle of the city.

The circle as a shape is the foundation of Tegelberg's practice. Her fascination with the deceptive simplicity of this shape leads her into a persistent exploration of the possibilities of weaving. In the work "Held within dusk and dawn" the artist sought to create a space for tranquility and contemplation—an abstract landscape, a sunrise or sunset. Inside the pavilion, viewers encounter the weaves up close in an intimate setting.

 Vernissage Wednesday 15 May 16:00-19:00
Opening Hours:
Thursday-Friday 14.00-18:00
Saturday 12:00-16:00

Åmells is Scandinavia’s leading gallery and fine arts dealer established in 1920. We specialize in superior quality Scandinavian painting and sculpture with a main focus on 19th and 20th century as well as contemporary art.

Åmells presents new works by Oskar Korsár (b. 1977) in the exhibition “Speglingar på Styx”. Renowned for his skilful and evocative drawings and sculptures, Korsár employs a distinctive visual lexicon where the efficacy of lines is matched only by the remarkable technical finesse of his bronzes. His oeuvre features elongated female figures and humanlike creatures set within diverse environments, distinguished by refined chromatic and figurative effects and often incorporating allusions to art historical, mythological, or philosophical themes. “Speglingar på Styx marks” Korsár’s debut at Åmells, concurrently serving as his reintroduction to the Swedish art milieu.

Public Service was founded in 2022 by Peter Gerdman, Aleksandar Stojanovski and Axel Söderberg. Sprung from a shared passion for the mechanisms of the art world and collecting patterns, they want to accompany a new generation of Scandinavian collectors in engaging with highly talented artists, from around the world, and at a pivotal moment in their careers.
Public Service is dedicated to shape an innovative program with a global outlook and central to the gallery's programme is to showcase the most exciting young- to mid career international artists to a Scandinavian audience.

‘Landscape of Lost Histories’ - Kevin Claiborne

The exhibition showcases works across several mediums, including screenprint paintings, collages, and new works from Kevin Claiborne's Unconformity series. The Unconformity works are black abstract paintings made with materials from the earth, referencing that which has been lost or erased within the artist's own family history due to historical erasure and dislocation, inspired by the geological phenomenon known as The Great Unconformity - a gap in the Earth's sediment hundreds of millions of years long.

Our understanding of the world and our identities is shaped by the stories we tell. Our ability to share our stories is shaped by having access to our history and the privilege of preserving it. In this presentation of works, Claiborne offers the idea of Blackness as an evolving landscape of lost histories. Blackness is a vast and boundless landscape, shaped by the forces of time, with mountains of progress and valleys of despair, a place where the past and present intersect, and the future is still being written.

The gallery is part of the Östermalm gallery breakfast.
